Increasing productivity and improving the quality of the cocoa produced on smallholder farms, particularly in West and Central Africa, is one of Barry Callebaut’s main areas of focus. In 2005 the company created Quality Partner Program (QPP) for cocoa farmer cooperatives, later introducing Farmer Practices, a program which enables farmers to boost productivity and quality and to qualify for certification standards with Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ Certified, organic and others. In 2012 Barry Callebaut launched Cocoa Horizons to boost farm productivity, increase quality and improve family livelihoods, investing in farmer training, infrastructure including schools, and community education and health programs. They have initiated certification training and educational efforts, particularly sensitization about the worst forms of child labor.
